Our Family’s Expenses: November 2016

We ended up spending hundreds of dollars more than last month. House maintenance and holiday season related expenses were the culprits. I assume next month will be a challenging one too.

We continued to use EXCEL to track our expenses and, so far, seems like it is doing a good enough job. We didn’t see any reason to change it.

So where did the money go in November?

Holiday season is around the corner. You know what that means. More spending.? So here’s how it all broke down this month:

 

House & Home Improvement: Finally we started on our Home Improvement projects. First one was the maintenance on our electrical box. Some of the items below are calculated for this month. E.g. we pay home insurance once a year.

The total for the month went up about $480 – Electrical Box Maintenance.

Work/Job Related Items: This section includes union dues, parking and pension payments. They all will go away when we retire from work.

The total for the month went down about $22 due to putting less money towards my pension this month.

Vehicles [2]: Our car insurance may seem high due to having a part-time teenage driver included in our policy. In addition, carpooling to work allows me to drive less.

The total for the month went down about $50 due to driving less and no car maintenance expenses.

Health Care & Life Insurance: I am still thinking about dropping my life insurance. It is a double edged sword. Should I do it or not?

The total for the month went up only about $2.

Phone & Internet & Subscriptions: We don’t have cable but we use Netflix regularly. What we pay for internet stinks though.

Received $6 discount from my internet service provider this month. Yey – sarcastic one.

Household & Personal Items: Last month’s numbers were a bit higher than usual and this month’s numbers are pretty much the same as previous month.

I don’t think the numbers are bad considering it is the holiday season.

Groceries: I would like to keep this number below $600 every single month.

This month, we spent $21 more than the previous month. But we were still under $600. Not bad.

Dining Out & Entertainment: This section includes dinners, lunches, coffee shops (we love our coffee in this household), movies, games etc…

Went up about $51. Again, holiday season.

Alcohol: This has its own section because we love our wine and beer. I know I know. This should probably be one of the first things to cut to save more and use the money to invest. But everyone has their weaknesses. May be some day. ?

We spent $157 more this month. Please, don’t be alarmed. We were stocking up for the holiday season.

So our total comes to $4445.29. It seems high, but it is because of the maintenance of the electrical box and some holiday season related items. Hopefully, our expenses will go down when we downsize.

  1. Thank you for continuing to share your details. It’s so easy to spend an extra couple or even few hundred around the holidays without realizing it. We set aside a small amount each month year-round so we dont have to sweat the holidays. This lets us celebrate with family, friends and colleagues and not worry about an extra meal out or bottle of wine etc.

    1. That’s a great idea! We may try to implement something like that in the future, this is new to us and we are learning as we go. I know my wife loves this season so there isn’t much of a chance to get her to spend less, ha:)
