Our Family’s Expenses: October 2016

We ended up spending a few hundred dollars more than last month. But, all and all, it was not a bad month. There were no major expenses other than a few personal items for the kids, knock on wood.

We continued to use EXCEL to track our expenses and , so far, seems like it is doing a good enough job. We didn’t see any reason to change it.

So where did the money go in October?

I think we did OK. So here’s how it all broke down:

House & Home Improvement: Still not much spending on Home Improvement. But the number will certainly increase after January since we will be spending a bit to get our house ready to sell. Some of the items below are calculated for this month. E.g. we pay home insurance once a year.

The total for the month went down about $45 – slightly cooler weather.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
1,002.47 Home Insurance 106.00
Yard Maintenance 33.00
Sprinkler Maintenance 14.00
Trash & Recycling 14.00
Property Taxes 495.00
Mortgage Interest 134.90
Utilities – Heating 31.22
Utilities – Cooling/Water 174.35

Work/Job Related Items: This section includes union dues, parking and pension payments. They all will go away when we retire from work.

The total for the month went up about $20 due to putting more money towards my pension.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
518.48 Work related expenses 518.48

Vehicles [2]: Our car insurance may seem high due to having a part-time teenage driver included in our policy. In addition, I have been carpooling to work.

The total for the month went up about $86 due to an oil change and more driving.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount

Registrations & Permits 20.00
Gasoline 139.25

Health Care & Life Insurance: I was thinking about dropping my life insurance. But I didn’t act on it yet.

The total for the month went up about $68 due to copay and medicines for the little guy.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
494.01 Life Insurance 74.86
Health Insurance [Family] 344.50

Phone & Internet & Subscriptions: We don’t have cable but we use Netflix regularly. What we pay for internet stinks though.

No changes from the previous month.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
302.33 Netflix 9.99
Cell Phone 212.39
Internet 79.95

Household & Personal Items: Last month’s numbers were awfully low.

Money spent for personal items increased about $184. That was due to items like shoes bought for the kids.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
328.80 Household Items 86.71
Personal Items 242.09

Groceries: I would like to keep this number below $600 every single month.

This month, we spent $30 less than the previous month and we still buy plenty of fresh fruits and veggies… Not bad.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
504.00 Groceries 504.00

Dining Out & Entertainment: This section includes dinners, lunches, coffee shops (we love our coffee in this household), movies, games etc…

Went down about $26.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
206.49 Dining Out & Entertainment 206.49

Gifts: I didn’t know which section to include this one so it had its own.

$7.45 more than the previous month.

Alcohol: This has its own section because we love our wine and beer. I know I know. This should probably be one of the first things to cut to save more and use the money to invest. But everyone has their weaknesses. May be some day. 😜

We spent $16 less this month.

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount
70.99 Beer, Wine etc… 70.99

School/Education: This is a new section this month. It includes items like lunch money, school supplies, fees for classes etc..

Monthly Sub Total Expense Entry Amount

Fees: Another new section for this month.

Nothing to worry about. $4.75 for library late fees.

So total comes down to $3860.09. Not a bad number but it is still higher than last month’s total.

So do you budget? If you do how did you do last month?
